Before Aristotle’s Poetics
It was the reciting to memorize genealogy
To recall laws and culture
It was the verbal incantation of hymns
The elements of political, educative, spiritual ceremonies
It was the source of entertainment
The lyrics of love songs and dance of chants
It was the conveyor of prayers
The receptacle of stories and historical recall
It was the instructions for everyday living
From the Nile to the Volta River valleys
From Pyramid to Griot court writings
Long before colonial conquest
Poetry was
