He didn’t change.
She fell in love
with the him he wanted her to see,
a crafted illusion,
a shimmering lie
to steal
what she wouldn’t give
an imposter.

Beneath the surface,
the stranger stands
with borrowed words,
liquid promises,
a face no longer familiar.

She searched for truth
in eyes now void,
in the shadow where love once danced,
finding only echoes
of a deception well-played.

He didn’t change.
It was her heart
that unraveled,
her trust,
her faith,
faltering in the light
of this unmasked revelation.

Now she stands,
brokenhearted,
the illusion shattered,
wondering who it was
she loved
all this time.

Her love knows not
this man she sees …
Unmasked.

This is a recital of the poem “D.O.A.” at the Bowery Poetry Club (NYC). It’s along the same theme of the impact of deception on love. First published in 2020 as the 3rd post on the blog under same title “Unmasked.
