Everlasting-remember Love ©Dawn Minott

Beforeword: This poem is a lover’s endearing question: In that other life will your love search for me, find me, love no other but me?

When life turns into eternity’s grasp
Will memories of your love firmly clasp?
In that ethereal realm, will you recall
The love we shared, ‘twas the sweetest of all?

In realms beyond where time has no bounds
Will your heart seek mine in whispers and sounds?
Amidst cosmic wonders will you yearn for me
Finding solace in my love’s celestial rhapsody?

Know, no other soul can ignite this flame
It burns too deep, ‘twill forever be the same
Through lifetimes and realms our love will endure
A bond unbreakable forever and sure

And when life is interrupted by the call of death
Will our souls reunite, drawn by each other’s breath?
In that other life will your love still survive
To search, find me, keep this love alive?

Will destiny guide our souls’ embrace?
Across the abyss beyond infinity of space
When life turns into eternity’s night
I’ll find your love, it will be my light

Thanksgiving Reflections ©️Dawn Minott

Before-word: Reflecting in gratitude on life under and after the Covid-19 pandemic.

‘Twas the eve before the world changed, when the warmth of classrooms and offices still echoed in our hearts.

Before the embrace of sofas embraced us as makeshift desks.

Before teachers and colleagues transformed into pixels on screens, and lessons and meetings began with a click on the Zoom sign-in.

‘Twas the day before students yearned for traditional classrooms, as homeschooling unfolded as the norm in transferring knowledge.

Before the melody of keyboard taps replaced the hurried footsteps to hallways, and the mute icon held newfound authority in the symphony of virtual meetings.

Before “social distancing” became the norm, and live-streaming replaced the camaraderie of mall rendezvous.

‘Twas the day before time merged into a tapestry of jobs, school, play, and church—all woven within the sanctum of home.

Parents and guardians prayed for a reservoir of teacher-like patience, as Math and Science entered homes like uninvited guests.

The buzzword “new normal” meant no early wake-ups, no school commutes, no office travels—just the embrace of home-bound work.

Before the predictable rhythm of the curriculum was disrupted, and monotony replaced the rollercoaster of daily school life.

‘Twas the day before the novel coronavirus reshaped our world, and yet, in the midst of change, we find gratitude for the resilience that blooms, like a garden of thanks, leading us to the doorstep of Thanksgiving.

Midweek Boost: Regret Restrains ©️Dawn Minott

To live in regret is to live within the length of a leash that connects to the past.

The week is long. The weekend is short. Midweek is a good point to recharge to get over the hump with no regrets. Happy hump day!

Today I Started My Day In A Bathtub©

Today I started my day in a bathtub
No water
No bubbles
Just me, elongated legs and arms, stretched out
A fluffy pillow cushioning my back against hard porcelain
Sun beam piercing through the blinds bathing me in warmth
There’s a stillness in the air
Except for the steady second-hand chime of the clock on the adjacent wall
Each tick-tocking reminiscent of time’s certain passing
Thoughts free flowing like rain
Drip-dropping to my fingertips
Transforming into words
Transferring from mind to paper
I write
Words of gratitude and appreciation
Of thanksgiving and forgiving
Words to heal, to restore to empathize
I write:
“Today I started my day in a bathtub”

After-word: When was the last time you nestled in a bathtub, just because…? Allowing it to envelope you for no other reason than … ‘cause you wanna?! I wrote this piece at a time of uncertainty and unrest and found solace in the sturdiness of the bathtub, in the strength of its curled-down edges and the confinement of its length and width (just enough room to snuggle you in protective-like)

Golden Love—Breath of God ©Dawn Minott |with video

on the rare occasion I’m videotaped while reciting

There she stood
Radiant in her beauty
A shimmering, bright goddess of gold in human form
Transfixed
He stares, then wills himself to speak the words
As if like copper
Conductor of electricity and heat
He draws her unto himself
And she surrendered
Bone of his bone, flesh of his flesh
With the exchange of “I do” the two became one
Hearts on fire
They forged a bond no human means can separate
Traversing the ups and downs over 50 years together
For better or for worse this golden couple
Love, and live, and laugh

LOVE

Its intensity dense
Impenetrable by any other
Its texture soft
Molding into “I forgive” before the sun descends, no wrath
It’s a life source
Nurturing children of your loins and those of your choosing
Its foundation spiritual, solid
Not reactive no matter the circumstances
Your love is unconditional

LIVE

Moving this and fixing that
Flowers here and flowers there
Creating a place of solace
You made your house a home
A home where disciplinarian actions were structured
Always meted out with kindness
A home-like sanctuary
With “High Priest” and “First Lady”
Where praises like incense rise and
Blessings like rain fall
Your love is spiritual

LAUGH

Like gold that lies deep in earth’s core
So is laughter central to your soul
The telling of edgy jokes
She giggles and prods
Balanced with tinges of embarrassment, he simply smiles along
You’ve met life’s challenges with expressions of emotional states of joy and happiness
Your love is laughter

At 50 years of wedding bliss
Your love is unconditional
Your love is spiritual
Your love is laughter
You’re draped in gold—the breath of God

After-word: Many of the pieces I write are commissioned. This piece was written for a couple on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary. It’s a personal piece based on conversations with their children and closest friends. I chose the title because gold is the symbol of 50th anniversaries and ancient Egyptians called gold “the breath of God.” The husband, who I affectionately called Dad, has since passed on (may he Rest In Peace). I post this in tribute to his life, their love and their lives together.

Ode to Sunrise

This morning I woke up to the most beautiful orange hue filling every corner of my room, cascading in from the window above my bed.

I got super excited because I knew the sun was on full-on display, and today’s DAWNing was gonna be majestic!!! I was right!

So I grabbed my trusty phone camera and like a kid bouncing up and down the bed eventually captured a good shot.

From the bathroom window—which gave a better view—as far as my eyes could see, all across the horizon, the rising sun splashed her shimmering yellowish-orange colors across the sky.

In that moment I was reminded of the beauty of new beginnings and all the potential that lies in new beginnings.

I believe SUNRISE is

a reminder of the Creator of the universe of how
beautiful BEGINNINGS can be

Tribute: Remember Me© [phase3]

Before-word: I wrote this piece as a tribute to the life of a dear dear friend (may her soul Rest In Peace). There was so much to say about this beautiful life, sharing it here in phases, this is phase 3.

Remember Me In The Laughter

I am the laugh
That laugh
Bubbling up from the sole of my feet
Marinating in my heart
Escaping my lips
Ricocheting. Resonating. Reverberating.
Eliciting the spontaneous movements of your face and lips
Forcing you to join in the expression of what had caused my amusement
Listen
Can you hear it?
Let it permeate your heart
Make you smile through the tears
I am alive in your laughter
Cry for me but most of all in joy

Remember me

Remember Me In Familial Affection

I am the affection
The arms which held my mamma in death
Are the arms which held my daughter through life
The hands with which I ceaselessly toiled
Are the hands which extended care to kin near and far
The lips that never ceased to mouth “I love you”
Are the lips with which I’ve expressed my endless devotion
The eyes that saw the best in others
Are the eyes which closed in prayer, all’s forgiven, I hold no grudge
For as long as you keep family bonds strong
My heart beats on
I am alive in the affection

A Letter to Your Younger Self: The “HOW TO”

I did this exercise (writing to my younger self) a few years ago and revisited it recently. I found it therapeutic and fun! It’s a good way to explore your relationship with yourself, to reconnect to points in your past and use that connection to inform positive changes for your now and your future.

Have you done this exercise? If not and you’d like to, here are a few tips to get you through it:

  • Start by choosing a period in time or age and try to recall the major experiences of that time. As your memories unfold, also connect to the emotions they evoke.
  • Think of what advice the you today would give the you at that age. You could give tips on how to not “sweat the small stuff” and also encouragement to face challenges.
  • This is a good exercise to find self acceptance and also to boost your self esteem. To get the greatest value, lean into the emotions that you feel, don’t judge just allow yourself to feel. You may journal these emotional feelings and do so with intention. Intentionality means seeing how you can shift the perceptions around those old emotions and open space for healing.
  • Instead of ruminating negatively, do so with gratitude. Look for ways you have grown or what lessons can be learned to be a more resilient you.
  • Be sure to affirm you and speak with love and acceptance.

Your life is a journey. You cannot change the past but you can learn from it and grow. This exercise is one fun way to do that.

I believe no experience goes to waste, instead we can learn and grow from them.
