In Jamaica’s embrace, my heart recalls
Cherished memories, as raindrops fall
The first few droplets, on scorching terrain
Unleashing petrichor’s earthy-fragrant reign
Hot ground beseeched, quenched by nature’s grace
Vapor ascending in a calming embrace
That earthy scent kissed by rain’s soft touch
A tender whisper, I’ve missed so much
Pitter-patter ricocheting off zinc rooftop
Nature’s symphony, a comforting backdrop
Childhood’s realm, a world of pure delight
Where simplicity and joy took whimsical flight
All worries melt away in this nostalgic space
Recalling petrichor weaving her mystical embrace
Ahh, exhaling gratitude, a heartfelt sigh
For memories cherished, never to deny
Petrichor, a gift from nature’s grand design
Where rain and earth unite—oh so divine
In Jamaica’s land, those moments held dear
Petrichor’s essence forever near

Kim, hostess at dVerse, invites us to choose one of the basic four
elements and write a poem. My choice — water (rain) — in this republished piece.

”Childhood’s realm, a world of pure delight”—you definitely took us there! I love the sound of rain on rooftops.

The focus on the scent work so well for water, and petrichor is a fantastic word

It really does. If ever you need to use the sense of smell for water it’s at the first part of rain on a hot day when the parched earth meets the first raindrops. Uuuummm … petrichor 👃 💦💕

I’m so glad you joined us for the Four Elements Poetics, Dawn, with a delightful poem about one of my favourite smells and things: rain. I so enjoyed the evocative lines:
‘The first few droplets, on scorching terrainUnleashing petrichor’s earthy-fragrant reign’
and
That earthy scent kissed by rain’s soft touchA tender whisper, I’ve missed so much’.
I imagine rain is precious in Jamaica.

Rain is absolutely precious in Jamaica. I remember as a kid those first few drops on the parched earth and I see the steam coming up off the ground —it was like magic in my little girl mind. And then that earthy smell. We’d make mud pies.
Now when it rained at night—that was a whole different vibe. The raindrops on the zinc roof trump every sleeping pills on earth—it lulled you into the most peaceful rest. I miss those simple days.
Thanks for a great post. You sent me down memory lane again and it was wonderful 💕🌺💕

Beautiful poem. It’s funny because people typically don’t enjoy getting rain while on vacation. But this sounds like the rain was most welcome. It’s funny how nature can smell even more amazing right after it rains.

I know. It smells good. It looks good. Mommy Nature know how to take care of herself. Nature’s self-care!!!

Thanks Michele. The sound of the rain can be dreamy (not negating it’s sometimes a destructive force). Enjoy the next time rain shows you her beauty side 😊

You are welcome, Dawn. I pray the SW sees some decent monsoon storms soon. It is dangerously hot outside.

The weather pattern has been weird. How are the blooms holding up?!

Not too bad… a few plants are mouldering, but overall, they seem to be happy with all the moisture.

Ok good, that’s great. The garden looking good here too. This year again my hydrangeas are barely blooming. Of 6 plants only 1 flowering and even so it’s just 1/single cluster 🙄🙃😢

If my memory serves me, I think you have H. macrophylla, which blooms on ‘old’ wood from the previous season. Don’t cut it to the ground at the end of the season. Leave at least 6″ of stalk.

Ok. I’ll make sure not to. Last year was the same . The plants are quite lush. Beautiful healthy looking leaves but very scanty blooms. Thanks for the advice Eliza!!!!

A little bonemeal or similar phosphorus fertilizer will boost blooms, too. 🙂

Ok. I’m heading to nursery tomorrow for sure. Is it too late to stimulate blooms this season?! Thanks Eliza 💕💕💕

Scratch it into the soil (under the mulch if you use it) as it may attract animal interest. Water it in, should be good!
