Be Like A Tree ©Dawn Minott

In this hemisphere’s exit from summer’s sway
Days are growing shorter, skies turning gray
Ponder trees, listening to their whispered art
To hear wisdom they impart to open hearts

They stand as teachers, ancient and wise
With lessons hidden in their varied size
In every leaf and branch there is a key
To how our own lives really ought to be

Be rooted, like an oak so valiantly strong
When storms of life come, hold on for the long
With a foundation form, stay deeply bounded
Finding strength, be solidly grounded

Be constant, like the fir—timelessly green
Be who you are no matter if you’re seen
Embrace you, running your own race
In the rhyme and rhythm of nature’s space

Be pliable, as the willows weep
In storms, their limbs, they gently sweep
Adapt, don’t break, in life’s harsh gale
Persevere, flexibility will oft prevail

Be photosynthetic, seek the light
In darkest hours, shine oh so bright
Turn sunlight into strength and growth
From every challenge, find your oath

Be poetic, like the cherry’s bloom
In every season find your room
To share your beauty, life’s sweet song
In verses, words, and actions strong

Trees, in autumn’s vibrancy show
Their leaves like memories, they will let go
A lesson profound, as seasons flow
To let the past depart and from it grow

As we embrace the changing view
From summer’s green to autumn’s hue
Trees reveal the path we all should know
To let dead things go and with life, flow

The d’Verse prompt is to use artwork from this webpage and write a poem inspired by the piece selected. I selected this piece because it resonated with the season. It’s based off a previous post of prose entitled “Be like a Tree—now a poem of the same title!

    1. Thanks dearest! Some days things align—a prompt lands on my page, it resonates with my thoughts in that moment, and MOST IMPORTANTLY it lands at just the time when I have a few minutes to write —and voilà! —a good poem is born. Most days it’s hard to find writing time when my work days are often 12 hour days. I write on the weekend, cue up posts for the week—only way to keep the blog “alive” 🙃 And if the time-god is on my side I write a post or two during the week.

I very much appreciate your constant feedback and positive vibes Sadje.

      1. Well, when the rain stops, I know where you will be! LOL 🌳🌞🌲 It’s cooler here, and I am not complaining considering the 90+ degree temperatures we had about a month ago and during the summer. We had a rainy day here today, but I embrace that too. I love looking out the window at the downpour, then it makes me very, very sleepy!!! 😴💤🥱

            1. Never heard that song. LOVE it. The start with the sound effects is beautiful. It’s a perfect fit for a poem I wrote caked “walking in the rain”. Im gonna have to republish it and link it to this song. It’s a perfect collab. Thanks misseyKym!!!!

                1. So just do you know … the song is on repeat over here.
That’s what I do when a song sings to my heart.

I’m old school too. Throwback to when songs had meaningful lyrics, not just one stanza repeated 50 times and all it got going for it is good beats. Give me stories set to music and my heart is right. So thanks for putting my heart on happy 🙂💕😊 🎵 🎼 🎶 😊💕😊

                  1. Guuuuurrrrrrlllll sistah queen, you hit the lyrical nail on the head. I am so there with you, on the same page! Cheers to old school music with a valid and empowering message in mind!!! 📀🎼🎷💿🎭🎶🎹 And yes, words that I remember 50 years later! 🥰

    1. Thanks Melissa. nature is a fabulous teacher. I think we aren’t always very good students 😊 trees have mastered the “letting go” we on the other hand “hold on” even to our detriment sometimes. Appreciate you stopping by.

    1. Thanks so much. My first post in this was more like a mini essay. Turning that post into poetry really sold the ideas better. This is why I love poetry as a communication form —it artistically communicate what prose can’t. Add music to the right poem and you have an award winning song on your hand (I guess I gotta find me a musician)😊

    1. Thanks Björn. Appreciate your thoughtful response. When I was researching the willow I found it had different symbolic meanings across cultures ranging from good luck and protection to loss and hope. I went with the “weeping willow” to fit the context of what I wanted that stanza to say. Plus weeping was the 1st descriptor of the willow that came to mind. Cheers 😊🙏🏽😊
