Alone
Stands waiting
Waiting in vain?
Grasping the bouquet
Fidgeting with hair strands
Hiding tears behind the veil
Can it be that he’s not coming?
Wedding vows left forever unsaid?
She alone stands waiting … waiting in vain?

This was written in response to Suzanne Brace prompt for W3 Prompt #78 (thanks to David for hosting): to share an emotion in a “Declina Refrain” poem. Thanks to Suzanne for introducing me to this form.

A Dectina Refrain is a poetic form written with your syllables going: 1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/10. Your 10th line is comprised of your first four lines all together as one stand alone line which may/may not be in quotation marks. This was influenced by Downtown Abbey.

  1. What a beautiful Dectina Refrain Dawn. I love your take on this prompt. But honey, in all seriousness, sistah would be out the door and the alleged groom needs to disappear without a trace. I’d be like a blood hound sniffin’ for his deadbeat butt over the river and through the woods! 👰🏻💔🤵🏻

    1. Oh for sure. I enjoyed writing that piece. I just shared in response to David that the combination of the prompt (to speak to an emotional situation) and the poem’s form sent my thoughts in that direction and the poem kind o’ wrote itself. I was just along for the ride😊. Thankfully it’s fictional—that’s an emotional scar 🖤 that I’d be hard pressed to recover from 🙃☹️

        1. Oh yes 100% fictional—thankfully (not sure my heart could survive that). It’s using that “3rd eye” of us creatives who can not only empathize but also vocalize/write so well it reads as real/lived experiences. The prompt and structure of the poem’s form took my thoughts in that direction and it literally wrote itself. It took me about 5 minutes to write it.
