Birthday 2026: Alignment ©Dawn Minott

This year, 2026, my birthday fell on a Tuesday again—the seventh time it has aligned this way since my birth. It won’t align this way again until 2037!

There’s something about that number that makes me pause. Seven often marks completion, a cycle coming full circle. For this reason this year’s birthday feels like alignment.

And, this year’s birthday finds me in Kenya! This marks my seventh rotation for work—my seventh time stepping into a new place and being asked to build a life from the ground up. That process has taught me that there’s a difference between simply living somewhere and actually building a sense of belonging. Living is transient. Building requires intention.

At the center of that intention is community.

With each move I challenge myself to stretch beyond my instinct to stay inward and ask: who will I gather, and who will gather me?

Over time, I’ve come to see that community isn’t something you passively find. It’s something you actively create. It takes openness, presence, and a willingness to invest in people before anything feels settled.

This year, that realization came into focus in a simple but meaningful way—my birthday dinner at DAWN. The restaurant’s name obviously didn’t escape me. A new place, a new chapter, and a gathering under a name that echoes my own.

Around the table, under the canopy of an array of monochrome-shades of red faux flowers, were a mix of people who, not long ago, were strangers—Kenyan, Jamaican, Canadian, American, Italian, Ghanaian, Indian, Korean. Different backgrounds, different stories, all brought together in one space.

What stood out and warmed my heart most wasn’t just the diversity, but the presence. Everyone invited said yes. In a world where schedules are full and connections can be fleeting, that kind of response spoke volumes.

The evening was conceived first as a celebration, but as the evening wore on it also became a quiet confirmation that something had taken root. I was finding my place in Kenya. Starting to feel settled. Not because everything is familiar, but because I am no longer navigating it alone. There is a flow beginning to form, shaped by shared moments, conversations, and the early foundations of trust.

Seven alignments. Seven new beginnings. Seven reminders that while place may change, the need for community does not.

And I believe that’s the real alignment—not just the calendar returning to a familiar position, but the realization that wherever I go, I have the capacity to build, to connect, and to belong.

Happy birthMONTH to me!!

A Prayer of Surrender

Before-word: This is a paraphrase of a psalm penned by my best-Bible-friend, David (King of ancient Israel), as recorded in Psalms 139.

Dear God, investigate my life;
get all the facts firsthand.
I’m an open book to You;
even from a distance, You know what I’m thinking.
You know when I leave and when I get back;
I’m never out of Your sight.
You know everything I’m going to say
before I start the first sentence.
I look behind me and You’re there,
then up ahead and You’re there, too—
Your reassuring presence, coming and going.
This is too much, too wonderful—
I can’t take it all in!
Is there anyplace I can go to avoid Your Spirit?
to be out of Your sight?
If I climb to the sky, You’re there!
If I go underground, You’re there!
If I flew on morning’s wings
to the far western horizon,
You’d find me in a minute—
You’re already there waiting!
Then I said to myself, “Oh, He even sees me in the dark!
At night I’m immersed in the light!”
It’s a fact: darkness isn’t dark to You;
night and day, darkness and light, they’re all the same to You.
Oh yes, You shaped me first inside, then out;
You formed me in my mother’s womb.
I thank You, High God—You’re breathtaking!
Body and soul, I am marvelously made!
I worship in adoration—what a creation!
Like an open book, You watched me grow from conception to birth;
all the stages of my life were spread out before You.
The days of my life all prepared
before I’d even lived one day.
Your thoughts—how rare, how beautiful!
God, I’ll never comprehend them!
I couldn’t even begin to count them—
any more than I could count the sand of the sea.
Oh, let me rise in the morning and live always with You!
Investigate my life, O God,
find out everything about me;
Cross-examine and test me,
get a clear picture of what I’m about;
See for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong—
then guide me on the road to eternal life.

Do It Now

An adaptation of Berton Braley’s poem, “Do It Now”:

if with pleasure you are viewing
any work someone is doing
if you like them or you love them
tell them now

don’t withhold your approbation
till the parson makes oration
and they lie with snowy lilies on their brows

no matter how you shout it
they won’t really care about it
they won’t know how many teardrops you have shed

if you think some praise is due them
now’s the time to slip it to them
for they cannot read their tombstone when they’re dead

more than fame and more than money
is the comment kind and sunny
and the hearty, warm approval of a friend

for it gives to life a savor,
and it makes you stronger, braver
and it gives you heart and spirit to the end

if they earn your praise—bestow it,
if you like them let them know it
let the words of true encouragement be said

do not wait till life is over
and they’re underneath the clover
for they cannot read their tombstone when they’re dead

Afterword: I was taught this poem as a child and recited it many times over the years. It’s a beautiful motto I’ve come to live by.

Mid-Week Boost: Persevere!

With one word—persevere—US Supreme Court Nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson preached a sermon and let lose a rallying call.

In that one moment her daughter looks on in admiration and confirmation that her mom is not only the epitome of perseverance but that she has her mom to emulate as she too will need to persevere.

On the other hand is her husband, and he is in tears. He’s listened and watched his wife being battered and grilled relentlessly. Despite having more judicial experience than 43 of the last 58 the US justices who took the bench, some members of the Congress could not forgo racist throes, ludicrous questioning and misogynoir.

Many many moments of the confirmation hearing stood out for me. But, when asked what she’d say to young people, her response: “I would tell them persevere”, really resonated with me!

And she’s demonstrated perseverance throughout her studies, her career, her life, and surely drew on it during her Supreme Court Nomination Hearing.

At this mid-week point of the week, let’s join the rallying call to PERSEVERE!!!!

Midweek Boost: Autumn’s Hooray

Reflecting on photos from my favorite park mixed with quotes from folks who spoke the sentiments of my heart before I did …

“Autumn leaves shower like gold, like rainbows, as the winds of change begin to blow.”– Dan Millman

“There is something so special in the early leaves drifting from the trees–as if we are all to be allowed a chance to peel, to refresh, to start again.”– Ruth Ahmed

“Fall has always been my favorite season. The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale.”—Lauren Destefano

“I hope I can be the autumn leaf, who looked at the sky and lived. And when it was time to leave, gracefully it knew life was a gift.” – Dodinsky

“Of all the seasons, autumn offers the most to man and requires the least of him.”– Hal Borland

“Fall for Jesus, He never leaves.”—Author Unknown

“Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all.”—Stanley Horowitz

The Sunshine Blogger Award

I was nominated by Grace over at Graceofthesun for the Sunshine Blogger Award.

First I was SURPRISED and ELATED then I was a bit perplexed because being new to blogging I didn’t know 11 bloggers well enough to nominate them nor did I want to do it just to check a box. So it took me a few weeks to get to this point where I can meaningfully engage other bloggers as part of the acceptance of this award.

Having said that, Graceofthesun is an eclectic collection of inspirational, aspirational, motivational and captivating poems written by the gifted and prolific Grace—she posts at least once per day. You’ll be spoilt for choices of great pieces to read and interact with. Don’t believe me?! Go see for yourself at Graceofthesun!

Grace it’s been a joy delving into your work and along the way gaining an e-friend. Thanks for the nomination friend. Now here are my long-over-due-better-late-than-never 😉 responses:

  1. What is your proudest accomplishment?
    Being a connector of people.
  2. What makes you laugh the most?
A good bit of comedy. Comedians have that “3rd eye” and I enjoy seeing the world through their comedic expressions.
  3. If you met you, would you want to be your friend and why?
Well yes of course😉 Not to toot my own horn but since you asked: I’m transparent—what you see is what you get. I’m honest and loyal. You’ll have a ride-an’-die friend for life.
  4. What do you like most about yourself?
The traits I mentioned in #3.
  5. If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Perish the thought!! 😉 Food is too culturally, ethnically, geographically and seasonally diverse to even fathom only one type of meal.
  6. If you can be anyone else in the world, who would you be or would you be yourself? (please explain)
Hands down I’d be myself—because no one can do what I do the way I do it and that would be a loss to the world.
  7. Who is your hero?
    Another hands down—my encourager, behind-the-scene-supporter, motivator, sacrifice-maker, unconditional-love-giver MOM!
  8. What motivates you most?
Being MAD. Yes, MAD—Making A Difference in people’s lives.
  9. What did you want to be when you were small?
A model. I turned out to be an International Civil Servant…go figure uh?!
  10. If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be?
Do what billionaires do with billionaires’ money (cha ching 💰)!
  11. Would you say you are resentful or can you let go of things easily?
    I’m a water-off-duck-back kinda girl.

Sunday Photo Reflection #7: Happy Garden Vibes

One of the positive things about movements being restricted by this pandemic is that it freed up time and so I picked up new hobbies. In addition to blogging (you may like “Why I Created This Blog”), I also started gardening over the past 2-3 months and it’s been pure JOY!

So before I lose them all, I froze the remaining ‘blooms of my labor’ in photo memories which I’d like to share with you.

Space 1: The rhododendrons now have the company of a range of other perennials like fox gloves, roses, daisies & tickseeds.
Space 2: For this space I had to take out a couple evergreens, broke my heart to do it; but, that gave the room needed to add color, texture & dimension to the space.

Today’s photo reflection is a mix of photos accompanied by quotes from others who are equally captivated and inspired by nature as I am and said things I’d say myself but they got to it first so now I get to quote them😉😉.

David Hobson got it right when he said
I grow plants for many reasons: to please my eye or to please my soul, to challenge the elements or to challenge my patience, for novelty or for nostalgia, but mostly for the joy in seeing them grow.”
Phyllis Theroux—
“I think this is what hooks one to gardening: it is the closest one can come to being present at creation.”
George Bernard Shaw you nailed it—
“The best place to find God is in a garden. You can dig for Him there.
“God Almighty first planted a garden. And indeed, it is the purest of human pleasures.
—Francis Bacon
Gertrude Jekyll got it right when she said—
“A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all it teaches entire trust.”
“Life begins the day you start a garden.
Chinese proverb [my life has just begun 🥳]
Alfred Austin, the only thing I’d add is “sweat on your brow”—
“The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul.”
Rudyard Kipling, it’s tue—
“Gardens are not made by singing ‘Oh, how beautiful,’ and sitting in the shade.”
—Gardens are made by heart-work!❤️
Many evenings I just sit still in the garden, and you’re right Ruth Stout—
“Working in the garden gives me something beyond the enjoyment of the senses. It gives me a profound feeling of inner peace.”
Stoufer I absolutely agree, a garden must be like heaven on earth—
“When heaven falls to earth it becomes a garden.”
“Gardening is the art that uses flowers and plants as paint, and the soil and sky as canvas.”
—Elizabeth Murray
“The home gardener is part scientist, part artist, part philosopher, part plow [woman]. [She] modifies the climate around [her] home.”

—Thank you John Whiting! You totally get it!! A garden has powers to shift the atmosphere.

Sunday Photo Reflection #5: The Lady & Her Fighter

Every lady needs a fighter, a warrior, a defender of her honor

Not a page or a squire

A man of special military rank, ceremonially inducted

A mounted man-at-arms in devoted service of his lady

Bounded, is he, to chivalrous acts

An attendant and a champion true

A knight in armor

Shimmering

Ornate

Decorated

Colors jewel-bright

Spectacular fins for sword

The lady and her fighter…

Fish

Meet my Tyson. No, not Mike! MY-Tyson—my fighter fish, oops, I mean knight in shimmering color! 😊
