It’s raining young people off roofs
Suicide epidemic—the numbers are proof
A single gun shot aimed at the head
Appearing well but next day, dead
***
Don’t take it for granted you’ll see the signs
Till you read another tragedy in the headlines
Don’t judge by what you see on the outside
It’s not always a testimony of the turmoil inside
***
Life may be hard even when they make it seem easy
Smiling through tears, living life like it’s breezy
Emitting the brightest light while absorbing life’s darkest
Till it’s too much and they give up, do the hardest
***
You don’t know what someone may be going through
Laughing through pain, hiding feelings of blue
Be a kind human, mind the words you say
That word may be the one to save a life today

So moving and sadly so true as well. Let us open our eyes and ears. Let us be careful and mindful. Let us reach out with a helping hand. And most of all: let us be understanding and accepting.

Suicide is a subject very much unspoken, so often those who feel ‘on the edge’ keep it hidden. If we all spoke words kindly, as if they may be the last someone hears, maybe they wouldn’t be the last …. (if that makes sense)… great poem

Makes absolute sense Suzanne. I 100% agree. Being kind, emphatic, and listening intently goes a long way.

We are told over and over to put on a happy face. But there’s no shame in asking for help…if only we could impart that message too. (K)

I went through that with my youngest brother. He left no clues of his misery until it was too late.

Oh nooo 😢 sorry 😞 for your loss. That is often the case —very very sad. I hope the memories of your brother are sustaining you.

Even now, 5 1/2 years after his death, I still get so saddened when I think about all the years he dealt with depressions and wanting to commit suicide. People who don’t get it don’t have a clue.

It’s a hard and horrible road for anyone to journey. So sorry for your loss.
We can pay the closest attention to our loved ones yet sadly many times there are no signs.

A powerful poem, well written, Dawn. When my son was 14, he had a friend the same age who took his own life. It shocked us all; there were no signs. You can’t tell what someone is feeling on the outside. Thanks for sharing. ❤️

Pingback: It’s Raining … Suicide ©️Dawn Minott |World Suicide Prevention Day (10 September) – Breaking the Silence
Wow! What a powerful post. Thank you so much for sharing and raising awareness. As a suicide attempt Survivor myself, I can strongly resonate with these deep words. No one had the slightest clue I was in total disarray and wanted nothing more than to die. I was mentally and emotionally exhausted inside and out. All I wanted was for the mental turmoil and torture to stop. I took a whole prescription bottle of Lithium. I didn’t care anymore. Looking back to that dark day, is when I finally found my purpose in this world. That’s exactly why I have such a strong passion for Mental Health and it’s exactly why I blog about it to help raise as much Awareness as possible. I want more than anything to reach as many people who are suffering with their mental health to know they are not alone. Their are sooo many of us out there who get you and know exactly what it’s like to live in the dark. I’m trying to bring light and hope to so many. If I can help save a life or many lives, imagine the ripple effect. It’s breaks my heart to pieces when I see and hear our young kids have died from suicide when I could have possibly helped them.

Hi Jenny. I’m touched deeply by your sharing. You’re very brave. I’m glad you’re HERE and that you’re living your purpose and working so hard to increase awareness about mental health. The world can be a harsh place but then there’s also so much beauty if we can get past the dark days to see it. Thank you for this powerful personal brave share. Keep doing you, you’re a light bearer!

Yes Amen! Thank you so very much for your inspiring encouragement and uplifting words. I completely agree, this world is filled with so much hate and evilness, it’s no wonder our young kids today want to take their own lives. It’s a very sad and tragic reality. People like myself who lived in a world of darkness for so long, knows what it’s like not being able to see the beauty in life. Walking around in this world feeling invisible is the most loneliest feeling. But once that glimmer of hope on the other side begins to shine through, it’s the most peaceful feeling.

It is mind-blowing Dawn about how much this is becoming an epidemic. 😢 Thank for continuing to raise awareness about something that was once uncommon, now becoming a familiar nightmare. 🙏🏼 The external noise that is plaguing our societies around the world is staggering. People believe and have bought into lies more than love. Thanks for sharing.

Kym dear it really is mind-blowing. It’s part of why I appreciate your positivity. With the looming darkness in just about every sphere of life I look for light wherever I can find it and hold on to it!!!! Keep doing you as brightly as you do sistah !!!!!

Dawn, you have tugged at my heartstrings. I was talking to my brother about this very thing and the times are clearly different from when I was growing up. It appears that there is no respect for the gift of life because of all of society’s pressures that send us spiraling out of control (if we allow them to).
Like you, I have to feed off of the light and hold on to hope. We have to refocus on the gift of life, the positive aspects that keep us going, and don’t get distracted by the distractions, although we know they are all around us. “Hope” girlfriend is what keeps us going, and you too continue to let your light shine ever so brightly. You own that sistah! ✋🏼🤜🏼🤛🏼👍🏼

Yes owning it. Hope hope and more hope.
The US surgeon general for 1st time put out warning ⛔️ for young people and social media ⚠️ we didn’t have to deal with this direct bombardment when we were growing up. And algorithm that is a constant feed into whatever is feeding people’s psyche to self-cancel.
Let’s keep the positivity in the spaces we occupy sistah girl!!! Big e-hug 🤗

These are indeed tough times. If I may share—for me, I find solace in my relationship with God. Without that I know I’d not be able to hold it together. And I minimize my exposure to the sadness around (mostly watching select parts of the news). Let’s hold a safe space for those in our circles who are hurting. Stay safe and well

This is deep and creatively conveys a lot of the sentiment that is being expressed in our world recently. The devil is a sly old fox and such a liar! People really need the love of Jesus, expressed through the church. ❤️💖💗🙏🏾

People’s hearts are failing from fear and the result is this pandemic of canceling their lives. I couldn’t agree with you more —we, the church, must do more to show that Jesus loves and care.
